Strike Looms at National Hospital Abuja as Doctors Threaten Walkout

Tension is rising at the National Hospital, Abuja, as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) signals its intention to join the ongoing industrial action affecting public hospitals across the country.

Doctors had initially continued emergency services despite the strike by other health workers under JOHESU. However, the NMA has now issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address demands related to welfare and working conditions.

If unresolved, the NMA says its members nationwide may fully withdraw services—an action that could cripple operations at the National Hospital, where outpatient care is already suspended and patients are being referred elsewhere.

Hospital authorities say emergency units remain open, but there are growing concerns over the impact a full doctors’ strike could have on critical healthcare delivery in the capital.
