The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has issued a weather alert warning Abuja residents and those in neighboring states to prepare for heavy rains and thunderstorms from Sunday, June 8, 2025.
According to FEMD, the forecast based on predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicates likely evening thunderstorms across Abuja, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau on Sunday, with continued rain expected through Monday and Tuesday.
Engineer Abdulrahman Mohammed, Acting Director-General of FEMD, advised residents to remain cautious during this period. He urged people to avoid flood-prone areas, not to drive or park under trees during storms, and to unplug electrical appliances during lightning activity.
“Do not wade through floods. Wait until the water subsides before attempting to drive or walk through affected areas,” he said.
FEMD also advised residents to call the emergency toll-free line 112 in case of urgent situations. The agency assured the public that its search and rescue teams are on standby to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
This alert comes as the rainy season intensifies, with authorities calling for increased public awareness and adherence to safety measures.
