In a bold move to reduce fire outbreaks and gas explosions, the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has rolled out two key safety initiatives—the Nigeria Fire Extinguisher Control (NFEC) and Gas Explosion Prevention System.
Unveiled at FEMD’s Asokoro office, the programs aim to eliminate fake fire extinguishers, regulate gas cylinder practices, and enforce equipment safety standards.
FEMD Director General, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the effort as a “strategic intervention,” noting that all extinguishers will now carry unique IDs, with alerts for servicing and crackdown on unauthorized dealers.
The gas safety system requires proper training for sellers and enforces strict safety compliance.
Supported by the police, military, and fire services, officials say the initiatives signal a new era of proactive safety enforcement in Abuja and across Nigeria.
