Abuja, Nigeria – May 6, 2025

The United Nations has praised the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for its coordinated and proactive efforts in tackling sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the nation’s capital.

The commendation came during a visit to the Awyetu Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Bwari by UN envoy Dr. Najat M’jid, who lauded the FCTA’s multi-sectoral approach—uniting health, justice, and women’s affairs—to support survivors and strengthen prevention.

Dr. M’jid described the strategy as a model of collaboration that could be replicated in other regions, noting its effectiveness in addressing the complex nature of gender-based violence.

In response, FCTA officials welcomed the recognition but acknowledged existing challenges. They reaffirmed their commitment to expanding services, deepening partnerships, and ensuring greater protection for vulnerable groups across the FCT.
