The Federal Capital Territory Administration has clarified that it will not be submitting any proposal on the creation of state police, citing its unique status as a non-state entity under the direct control of the Federal Government.
This clarification comes as the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, prepares to meet on April 24 to discuss national economic and security issues.
While insecurity continues to escalate in several parts of the country, sources indicate that state policing will not be featured on the agenda for the upcoming session.
Unlike Nigeria’s 36 states, which have already submitted position papers either supporting or evaluating the feasibility of state police, the FCT remains fully aligned with federal security structures and awaits further policy direction from the central government.
Debate over the establishment of state police forces has faced repeated delays, with missed council meetings and rising political tensions slowing progress. Meanwhile, citizens across the country remain increasingly anxious for meaningful reforms to address the worsening security situation.
