Popular comedian and educator, Obinna Simon, popularly known as MC Tagwaye, has formally declared his intention to contest for the chairmanship of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the 2026 general elections.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Tagwaye announced that he would be contesting on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He said his ambition is fueled by a passion for inclusive governance and sustainable development, with a focus on addressing infrastructural deficits and overhauling the education sector.

“If elected, I will declare a state of emergency in education,” Tagwaye said, drawing from his personal background as a teacher with over eight years of classroom experience.

The entertainer-turned-politician also criticized what he described as a growing disconnect between local leadership and the residents, pointing out that over 70 percent of AMAC inhabitants are unaware of the identity of their current chairman—an issue he labeled as a “sign of leadership failure.”

He further highlighted the dire state of infrastructure in many communities under the council’s jurisdiction, especially the lack of accessible roads and functional schools.

Tagwaye called on residents to rally behind his vision, pledging to lead with “integrity, innovation, and education” if elected.

He also commended the SDP for what he described as its internal stability and its welcoming platform for new leadership.
