Panic spread across the Gwagwalada community on Monday evening following the discovery of an unidentified male corpse beneath a bridge along the bustling Abuja-Lokoja highway.
According to eyewitness accounts, the lifeless body bearing visible head injuries was discovered at approximately 5:37 p.m. by locals who had gone to wash clothes by the river.
One of the witnesses, Samaila Usman, told reporters that the victim was believed to have plunged from the top of the bridge the previous night. He added that local fishermen retrieved the body from the water and placed it on the riverbank, prompting alarm among nearby residents and drawing the attention of the police.
“Policemen came to the scene after we raised the alarm,” Usman said.
Speculations have since emerged suggesting that the man may have fallen after a night of heavy drinking. Residents allege he had been drinking at the popular Wazobia Park before attempting to walk home. It is believed he lost his footing while crossing the bridge and fell into the river below.
Confirming the incident, Adamu Ibrahim, an official with the Environmental Department of the Gwagwalada Area Council, stated that the body had been evacuated and deposited at a local morgue.
“The body has been taken to the mortuary while efforts are ongoing to trace the relatives of the deceased,” Ibrahim confirmed.
The grim discovery has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
