Security Personnel Shoots Himself While Trying to Arrest Suspect in Abuja
A vigilante officer, Mujahid Ibrahim (32), accidentally shot himself while chasing a suspect in Dei-Dei, Bwari Area Council, FCT. The incident happened around 12 a.m. on Wednesday.
Reports say Ibrahim’s rifle discharged, injuring his feet. Seven cartridges were removed from his body, and he is awaiting x-ray results to check for more.
Speaking from Kubwa General Hospital, Ibrahim explained that he and his colleague stopped a resident for being out past 11 p.m., the community’s agreed curfew. The man resisted, leading to a scuffle.
“To scare him, I pointed my rifle at the sky. I later lowered it to my shoulder but forgot to lock it. As I ran toward them, the gun went off, hitting my feet,” he said.
His colleague, Ben Isaac, confirmed that the suspect fled, but his elder brother took responsibility for the medical bills. Authorities have given the suspect 24 hours to surrender or face arrest.
