The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has unveiled the Barrister Nyesom Wike (BNW), VIP Ward at Maitama District Hospital, Abuja, in a bid to enhance healthcare services and reduce medical tourism.
Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), stated at the event that the facility was named after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in recognition of his contributions to healthcare improvement.
The ward, upgraded from three to five bedrooms, was made possible through philanthropic and corporate support.
While primarily designed for VIPs, Fasawe assured that the ward would be accessible to all residents who can afford it, with subsidized rates for those on health insurance.
She also announced plans to rehabilitate 14 general hospitals in the FCT, including doctors’ call rooms, under the 2025 budget.
Medical experts, including WHO Country Representative Dr. Walta Mulombo, praised the initiative, urging fair access to the facility.
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives also welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward addressing brain drain in the sector.
