Abuja, Nigeria – March 14, 2025 – In a significant move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial allocation of N120 billion aimed at enhancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Nigeria. This initiative is set to equip students with vital skills in various trades, including tailoring, phone repairs, and sewing, beginning in May 2025.
During a press conference, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the government’s dedication to establishing a skill-oriented education system that prepares students for the labor market’s demands. “This funding will provide our youth with the practical skills necessary to succeed in today’s economy and foster entrepreneurship,” he stated.
The program will adopt a dual-mode training approach, where students will spend three days in the classroom and one day focused on intensive practical training. Additionally, one day will be allotted for workshops, ensuring a comprehensive hands-on learning experience that boosts employability.
To empower Nigerian youth further, the government plans to offer six months of free skills training. This initiative aims to fill the two million job vacancies identified in sectors such as technology and vocational trades, creating opportunities for students to enter the workforce with relevant skills.
Collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Bank of Industry and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), will ensure that training programs meet industry requirements and provide necessary resources.
Alongside this skills training initiative, the government has announced plans to reconstruct 195,000 classrooms and enhance educational infrastructure nationwide by 2027, reinforcing its commitment to improving Nigeria’s educational landscape.
This investment in TVET highlights the administration’s focus on nurturing a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the nation’s economic growth and sustainability.
