The Director of Information and Communication, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Hazat Sule, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity and do away with religious, ethnic, and tribal sentiments that threaten the nation’s peace and progress.

Sule made the appeal during the 60th birthday celebration and book launch of Honourable Donatus Okonna at the Women Development Centre, FCT, Abuja. Represented by his Special Assistant (SA), Ben Ukeji, the Director emphasized the need to change the negative narratives that are deeply affecting societal harmony.

He noted that such sentiments continue to weaken the fabric of the nation and urged citizens to see one another as one, rather than through the lens of division. According to him, fostering unity will make Nigeria a better place to live.

While congratulating Hon. Okonna on his milestone celebration, Sule described the occasion as a testament to God’s favor. He also commended the caliber of dignitaries present, stating that their attendance reflected the impact and reputation of the celebrant.

Speaking about the newly launched book, titled The True Religion, Sule applauded Hon. Okonna for addressing such a crucial topic in today’s world. He stressed that it is rare to find people writing about true religion, adding that the book is a valuable contribution to societal values.

Reiterating his stance on unity, Sule urged the government at all levels to implement policies and programs that promote national cohesion. He also appealed to Nigerians to uphold the principle of being their brothers’ keepers.

Also speaking at the event, former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, emphasized the essence of true religion, which, according to him, is centered on caring for the less privileged.

“Nobody chooses to be poor—God made it like that. We cannot claim to be true believers if we neglect the poor in our society. It is our duty to care for the vulnerable because God will not come down from heaven to provide for them,” Okechukwu stated.

He further noted that crime and social vices are often driven by poverty, stressing that if the privileged support the underprivileged, many would not resort to stealing just to survive.

Professor Okpe Jonah Arumona, who reviewed The True Religion, highlighted its emphasis on helping the needy. He encouraged people not only to purchase the book but also to practice the values it promotes.

Arumona lamented that Nigeria continues to be perceived as a poor nation because many wealthy individuals fail to embrace the teachings of true religion. He pointed out that both the Bible and Quran instruct the faithful to care for the less fortunate.

In his appreciation speech, the celebrant, Hon. Donatus Okonna, thanked the guests for honoring the occasion. He shared that his passion for giving started at a young age, and he finds immense joy and fulfillment in helping others.

Okonna also called on the government and well-meaning Nigerians to partner with Basic Care Foundation to extend support to more indigent individuals in society.
