Driver Violates One-Way, Knocks Down Police Inspector Near National Mosque
A reckless traffic violation led to a serious accident on [Day] night, when a driver ignored road signs and struck a police officer on duty. The incident, which occurred in the high-security zone of Abuja, has raised concerns about increasing traffic violations and the safety of security personnel on duty.
According to a security source, the accident took place at approximately 9:00 p.m. when the driver, identified as David Auta, was operating a Toyota Hummer Bus (Reg. No. FKJ 527 CW). Auta reportedly disregarded traffic laws and took an illegal one-way route from the National Christian Center toward Wuse Zone 4, a stretch where violations have been frequently reported.
During his dangerous maneuver, Auta’s speeding vehicle collided with Inspector James Haruna, a police officer conducting a routine stop-and-search operation at Gate 1 of the National Mosque. The impact was severe, causing Inspector Haruna to be thrown to the ground, sustaining multiple bruises and a fractured left leg. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with officers and bystanders rushing to assist the injured inspector.
Immediately following the accident, fellow officers and emergency responders provided first aid before transporting Inspector Haruna to the National Hospital, Abuja. Medical professionals at the hospital confirmed that the officer suffered a fracture in his left leg and several contusions, but his condition is currently stable. He remains under medical supervision as doctors assess the extent of his injuries and determine the next course of treatment.
“The officer is in stable condition, but he will require extensive care and rehabilitation to recover fully,” a medical source at the hospital stated.
In response to the incident, law enforcement officers at the scene swiftly apprehended David Auta and took him into custody. His Toyota Hummer Bus was impounded as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have confirmed that Auta will face multiple charges, including reckless and dangerous driving, obstruction of law enforcement, and endangering public safety.
A senior police official commented on the arrest, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of road regulations.
“This is a clear case of negligence and reckless endangerment. The officer was carrying out his lawful duties when he was struck down due to the irresponsible actions of a driver who ignored traffic regulations. Such behavior will not be tolerated, and we will ensure that justice is served,” the official stated.
The incident has reignited discussions about road safety in Abuja, particularly in areas with high security presence. Many residents have expressed frustration over the increasing number of motorists disregarding traffic signals, taking one-way routes, and driving recklessly.
“This is not the first time someone has ignored the one-way sign in that area. Drivers need to be more responsible, and authorities must step up enforcement,” said a taxi driver who frequently plies the route.
Local transport unions and road safety officials have also urged the government to implement stricter penalties for traffic offenders, particularly those who engage in one-way violations that put other road users at risk.
In response, law enforcement agencies have vowed to increase patrols and surveillance in high-risk areas to prevent similar incidents. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Police Force have both assured the public that measures will be put in place to address reckless driving
Authorities have confirmed that David Auta is currently in police custody, and an investigation is underway to determine if there were other contributing factors, such as driving under the influence or mechanical failure.
Legal experts suggest that if found guilty, Auta could face severe penalties, including a lengthy suspension of his driver’s license, heavy fines, and possible imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Inspector James Haruna’s colleagues have continued to express concern over the safety of security personnel on duty. Some officers have called for better protection measures for those stationed at high-risk traffic points, including the installation of warning barriers, improved lighting, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging motorists to adhere to all traffic rules and prioritize safety to prevent further avoidable accidents.
This is a developing story, and more updates will be provided as new details emerge.
