Federal Government to Review Electricity Tariff for Band B and C Customers
Abuja, Nigeria – February 27, 2025 – The Federal Government has announced plans to review the electricity tariffs for customers in Bands B and C, aiming to create a more balanced and equitable pricing system. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this disclosure while addressing concerns over the current disparities in tariff structures.
Under the existing system, Band B customers, who receive between 17 to 18 hours of electricity daily, pay N63 per kilowatt-hour. In contrast, Band A customers, who enjoy just two additional hours of supply, are charged a significantly higher rate of N209 per kilowatt-hour. Minister Adelabu described this pricing structure as “unfair” and emphasized the need for a comprehensive review to ensure that consumers are charged fairly based on their electricity consumption and supply levels.
“The current tariff arrangement does not reflect an equitable distribution of costs and benefits. We must address this issue to ensure a fairer system for all consumers,” Adelabu stated.
The review is expected to lead to adjustments that will prevent undue financial burdens on consumers while also maintaining the financial sustainability of electricity providers. Stakeholders, including electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and consumer advocacy groups, are expected to be engaged in discussions to determine the best approach to tariff restructuring.
This move comes amidst ongoing efforts by the government to improve power supply reliability and affordability across the country. Many Nigerians have voiced concerns over erratic electricity supply and rising costs, prompting the government to intervene in the pricing structure.
As consultations begin, consumers in Bands B and C are urged to stay informed about potential changes that could impact their electricity bills. The Ministry of Power has assured the public that any adjustments will be made in a manner that prioritizes fairness and affordability for all stakeholders.
The proposed tariff review is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector, ensuring that electricity remains accessible and fairly priced for all citizens.
