
President Tinubu Departs Ethiopia for Abuja After AU Summit
Abuja, Nigeria – February 17, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for Abuja after attending the 38th African Union (AU) Summit. The Nigerian leader left the Ethiopian capital shortly after 4 p.m. local time, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia personally saw them off at Bole Addis Ababa International Airport, where President Tinubu received military honors before boarding his flight.
During the summit, President Tinubu engaged in high-level discussions with African leaders on regional security, economic integration, and development initiatives. Notably, the AU Assembly elected President Joao Lourenço of Angola as the new AU chairperson, while Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf was appointed chairperson of the AU Commission. The summit also launched the theme for the year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
Before the AU Summit, President Tinubu made a brief private visit to Paris, France, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and investment opportunities between Nigeria and France.
President Tinubu is expected to arrive in Abuja later today, where he will resume official duties, including engagements on Nigeria’s economic and security strategies.
