25 countries storm Abuja for Africa Military Games

Over 3,000 military personnel from 25 African countries have gathered in Abuja, Nigeria, for the second edition of the African Military Games.

The premier event aims to promote camaraderie, physical fitness, and regional collaboration among the continent’s armed forces.

The Games, beginning with a grand opening ceremony, will feature 19 disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, wrestling, shooting, and taekwondo.

Organised by the African Military Sports Organization (OSMA) in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence, the event underscores the unifying power of sports.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the competition, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, praised the Games as a platform to foster cooperation and strengthen military ties across Africa.

He said: “From November 18 to November 30, 2024, this event provides a unique opportunity for our armed forces to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie among participants, and strengthen military cooperation and partnerships.”

General Musa also highlighted the cultural richness on display, with participating nations showcasing traditional dances, military drills, and a flypast by the Nigerian Air Force during the parade of nations.

Nigeria’s Role as Host Nation

General Musa emphasised the significance of hosting the Games in Abuja, calling it a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to peace, security, and sports development.

He noted that extensive preparations, including infrastructure and logistical arrangements, had been made to ensure a successful event.

Calling on Nigerians to support the Games, he added: “We urge citizens and friends to come out in mass and support our armed forces. Let us show the hospitality for which Nigerians are known. We are looking forward to a remarkable and unforgettable competition.”

Providing more details about the competition, Air Vice Marshal Timothy Mapis explained that the Games would involve military personnel from 25 countries, in addition to Nigeria, competing in 19 sporting events.

He said: “Between yesterday and today, early tomorrow morning and tomorrow evening, the rest of the nations that have indicated their interest to participate, at the end of the day, we should be having 25 countries plus Nigeria, competing for 19 sporting events.

“Most of the events will be taking place here, at the main goal and parquet field. Obstacle crossing and shooting will not be taking place here in Abuja stadium.

“Shooting will be at the 177 Guards Battalion in Keffi, and obstacle crossing will be held at the Nigerian Military School in Giri. We invite all Nigerians to come and watch these Games.”

Running until November 30, 2024, the African Military Games serve as a platform for military personnel to compete, exchange best practices, and strengthen bonds across the continent.

The event highlights the potential of sports to unite diverse nations and foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
