The chairman of the Nigeria Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Anuja chapter, Engr. Mathew Odama, has called for practical approach to local technology development to save Nigeria from expensive equipment and technology importation.
Engr. Odama made the call at the 12th annual general meeting of the institution at secretariat, FCDA site office, NSE Abuja branch, Monday, with the theme; “Busting The Myths – CNG Safety and Issue Arising”.
He said the annual general meeting would make the institution to produce problem-solver engineers that will save the country from foreign spendings on technology importation
He noted that the task of nation building is anchored on the support of professional institutions in the country and charged all divisions of engineering profession under the NSE to take the lead in providing solutions to numerous challenges facing the nation.
Earlier, the chief operating officer (COO) of Auto Gas Limited Abuja, Mr. Kenneth Osagie, who was the guest speaker at the occasion, assured Nigerians that gas would still be cheaper than petrol in the next 20 years. According to him, Auto Gas Nigeria is organising a soft skills acquisition for upcoming engineers to bridge the gap between classrooms and industries.
In his key note address, Sir Engineer Abimbola Odubiyi said mechanical engineers have integral roles to play in the development of Nigeria and having a country that every citizen desires.
He said much was still needed to be invested in education and training of the mechanical engineers in Nigeria for the country to actualise its industrialisation agendas
“We have to be ready to invest in the future technology that we cannot see now, for the nation to achieve its technological advancement,” he stated.
The meeting provided opportunity for questions and answers to share ideas for the progress of engineering profession in Nigeria. It also featured conferment of awards to lecturers among others.
