The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expressed it readiness to enforce the 2003 Insurance Act to guarantee complete safety of all players in the industry.
The Coordinator Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, stated this while addressing developers, professionals, regulatory bodies and representative of relevant agencies of building industry during a stakeholders meeting in Zone 6, Wuse I District, Abuja.
According to him, the Department of Development Control is committed to enforcing all relevant laws in the industry including the 2003 Building Insurance Act.
His words: “We stand on a threshold of an important journey as we prepare to implement the 2003 Insurance Act.”
“The legislation represent a pivotal step forward for Nigeria, encapsulating the ideals of safety, security and professionalism within our construction and development sectors,” the Coordinator added.
The Coordinator, who was represented at the occasion by the Acting Director-General of FCT Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, said the 2003 Insurance Act is not just a legal document, but also a blueprint for safeguarding the lives of the workers, the integrity of the building and the well being of the communities.
Obuah explained that the Act mandates comprehensive insurance coverage, ensure that all stakeholders are protected against unforseen risk and liabilities.
He added that the safety of workers and buildings, protection of lives, employment generation, increase in productivity and enhancement of professionalism has been well covered by the Act.
Abuja Digest reports that participants at the meeting held a consensus view that most building collapse in FCT occur as a result of quacks involvement in construction.
