Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has tasked the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to rescue the capital city from the grip of kidnappers.

In a statement, yesterday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, lamented that the capital city has gradually moved from one of the safest places in the country to haven of armed kidnappers.

The rights group predicted that if quick wins were not implemented to curb the dangerous rise in sophisticated crimes, Abuja may witness a regime of self-help measures whereby the residents could be compelled to take the law into their own hands.

This, Onwubiko said, will occasion mob actions against perceived criminal elements found hibernating within their vicinities, or take up arms to protect themselves.

In the light of the unfolding scenario, HURIWA called on Wike to avoid the politics of distraction, but remain focused in carrying out his mandate by putting strong, unimpeachable and result-oriented measures to restore normalcy and security in FCT.

The group kicked against intense politicking over alleged disloyalty of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to him as his godfather.

HURIWA said the increasing wave of abductions in Abuja escalated since the inauguration of Tinubu’s administration.

The rights group said the recent statement from the officials in FCT Administration on plans to establish a cross-border joint task force made up of security forces from the FCT and neighbouring states remained a mirage, just as the FCT police command clearly became overwhelmed by the daredevil kidnappers.

Earlier in March, it was reported how gunmen, who appeared like armed robbers, stormed the estate on a Friday evening, stole some valuables and kidnapped 15 residents.

On October 26, more than seven months after the incident, armed men attacked the estate again and kidnapped three residents from two different apartments, even as a report emerged that the gunmen took the residents away after breaking down the fence to gain entry to the compound.

HURIWA lamented that Wike appeared to be heavily distracted in his current squabble with his political son.
