The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued a 16-year-old domestic worker in Abuja. She was allegedly scalded with hot water by her employer in the Gwarinpa area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to NAPTIP, the teenager, who hails from Imo State and is the eldest of 12 children, had been employed to care for her employer’s three children, including two-month-old twins and a seven-year-old boy, while the employer worked night shifts.
The agency revealed that neighbours, who witnessed the assault, quickly rushed the girl to a hospital and alerted authorities, prompting a swift rescue operation. The victim is now receiving medical attention, while investigations into the case have begun.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and stricter penalties against employers who abuse minors working as domestic staff.
