President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to take appropriate actions to proceed on leave ahead of the end of his tenure in October 2025.
The directive, confirmed by both the presidency and INEC sources, arises amid reports of a strained relationship between Yakubu and the APC government. His abrupt departure led to the cancellation of INEC’s quarterly meeting with political parties.
Yakubu, who has been the INEC chairman since 2015, is expected to step down after completing his two terms. President Tinubu is preparing to nominate a successor for Senate approval.
