The Federal Government has officially commenced work on the Kawu Climate-Smart Grazing Reserve in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, in what authorities describe as a forward-looking step to modernise livestock farming in Nigeria.

The project includes the construction of new infrastructure, drilling of boreholes, and rehabilitation of an existing dam to provide water for herders and their animals. Officials say the initiative will reduce open grazing, which has been a major driver of farmer–herder clashes in the country.

Speaking at the launch, government representatives said the project aligns with Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda and climate adaptation policies. The reserve is also expected to enhance food production and promote peaceful coexistence between farming and pastoralist communities.

Experts believe the initiative could become a model for other states, particularly in tackling conflicts tied to land use and grazing routes.
