Abuja Waste Contractors Threaten Strike

Waste contractors in Abuja have announced they will suspend services starting September 25 if the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) does not pay their nine months of outstanding wages.

The contractors, under the umbrella of the Association of FCT Solid Waste and Cleaning Contractors (AFSOWAC), issued the threat in a letter to the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday.

According to the association, members can no longer guarantee uninterrupted cleaning services in the city without immediate payment.

AFSOWAC, which manages sanitation across 44 service lots in Abuja, disclosed that its members evacuate more than 1,000 tonnes of waste daily using over 100 refuse trucks and 60 tippers.

The group warned that unless the arrears are cleared, it may be forced to halt operations, a move that could worsen waste build-up and endanger public health in the nation’s capital.
