Abuja, Nigeria –The Federal Government has cancelled the official Independence Day parade that was scheduled for Wednesday.October 1, 2025, citing security concerns.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, as security agencies moved to step up surveillance across the Federal Capital Territory. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed that no fewer than 4,500 personnel have been deployed in Abuja to safeguard critical infrastructure, public spaces, and soft targets ahead of the national day.

According to NSCDC Commandant-General Dr Ahmed Audi, the deployment is part of proactive measures to forestall threats and ensure the safety of residents. He emphasised that while the parade has been suspended, Nigeria will still mark its 65th Independence Anniversary with other low-key activities.

The decision comes amid heightened security concerns, including recent violent crimes and terror-related alerts in parts of the country. Residents of Abuja have been urged to cooperate with security operatives, remain vigilant, and report suspicious movements.

The cancellation of the Independence Day parade underscores the government’s cautious approach to national celebrations in light of ongoing security challenges.
