Shoprite Shuts Abuja and Other Stores in Nigeria

Retail giant Shoprite has shut down more outlets in Nigeria as the harsh business climate continues to squeeze operators in the sector.

In recent months, the company has closed its Kano branch at Ado Bayero Mall and the Novare Wuse Central Mall store in Abuja. Both outlets were sealed after struggling with high operating costs, weak sales and rising economic pressures.

Shoprite had earlier sold its Nigerian operations to local investors but retained the brand through a franchise deal. Since then, some branches have been forced to close while a few others remain in operation across the country.

Industry observers say the closures highlight the difficulties facing retailers in Nigeria, including soaring inflation, unstable exchange rates and dwindling consumer spending power.

For many shoppers, the shutdown of outlets is another reminder of how the economic crisis is reshaping daily life and limiting access to popular retail chains.
