The Federal Government has ordered all electricity generation companies (GenCos) on the national grid to activate Free Governor Control (FGC) on their generating units or face strict sanctions.
The directive, issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) under Order No. NERC/2025/094, was signed on August 26, 2025, by Vice-Chairman Musiliu Oseni and Commissioner for Legal, Licensing & Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye. It officially took effect on September 1, 2025.
Free Governor Control enables turbine governors to automatically adjust output to balance supply and demand, helping to stabilize grid frequency.
According to NERC, any GenCo that fails to implement FGC by November 30, 2025, will face a 10 per cent penalty on invoices for defaulting units, while generating units that remain non-compliant for 90 consecutive days will be disconnected from the grid.
The commission emphasized that the measure is aimed at strengthening grid stability and ensuring consistent electricity supply across Nigeria.
