The House of Representatives has reiterated its resolve to reform the judicial system in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure faster and fairer justice delivery.
At a public hearing on July 23, 2025, lawmakers discussed two key bills—one seeking a constitutional amendment to increase the number of FCT judges, and another proposing the creation of lower courts for civil and criminal matters.
Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee (FCT), Rep. Adamu Gamawa, said the initiative aligns with the 10th House’s agenda to make justice accessible and affordable to all residents, regardless of background.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Rep. Aliyu Madaki, described the hearing as vital to modernizing FCT’s legal system and easing the burden on existing courts.
NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), supported the bills but called for a review of some customary law provisions, particularly the removal of Section 16 of the Principal Act.
Stakeholders at the hearing expressed hope for impactful changes in the FCT’s justice system.
