Retired police officers and activist Omoyele Sowore staged separate protests in Abuja on Monday, demanding improved welfare for serving personnel and an end to the Contributory Pension Scheme for retirees.
The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers gathered at the National Assembly and Force Headquarters, calling the scheme unjust and seeking a full refund of their contributions. Union Chairman, Mannir Lawal, emphasized that the protest was peaceful and not linked to Sowore’s demonstration.
Meanwhile, Sowore criticized the federal government for neglecting police welfare, accusing it of mistreating officers both in service and retirement.
Police authorities have urged calm, assuring protesters that their concerns would be addressed.
