FMC Abuja Names New Emergency Head After Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja has appointed Dr. Timothy Samaila, a consultant neurosurgeon, as the new head of its Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit. This comes in the wake of a viral video that showed accident victims allegedly being neglected at the hospital, sparking public outrage.

The video, which made rounds on social media on June 6, drew heavy criticism and raised concerns over the state of emergency care at the facility.

In response, the hospital launched an internal investigation. According to the Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, a panel was set up to review the incident. While the findings confirmed that the victims were treated and discharged the same day, disciplinary measures are being taken against eight staff membersfour doctors, two nurses, and two attendants for possible negligence.

Some of the staff have already been referred to the hospital’s Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further action.

Prof. Ahmed said the appointment of Dr. Samaila is part of broader reforms aimed at improving emergency services and ensuring better patient care moving forward. He added that the hospital is also working on new partnerships to upgrade staff training and emergency response protocols.

He encouraged the public to use the hospital’s official feedback channels and assured that FMC Abuja remains committed to delivering quality, timely, and compassionate healthcare.
