Abuja – June 2025
Operations at the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) came to a halt on Monday as aggrieved staff members shut down the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate removal of the Chief Executive Officer.
The protesting workers, supported by union representatives, barricaded the main entrance early in the morning, disrupting official activities. They accused the CEO of mismanagement, poor staff welfare, lack of transparency, and failure to implement previously agreed resolutions.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the staff decried what they described as worsening working conditions within the agency. They insisted that the leadership had failed to uphold agreements on staff allowances and welfare packages, despite repeated engagements.
The protest mirrors similar actions recently witnessed in other federal establishments, including the shutdown of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) over unresolved labour issues.
Among the protesters’ key demands are:
- The immediate sack of the CEO;
- Full implementation of all outstanding agreements on welfare and entitlements;
- Greater transparency in the commission’s financial and administrative operations.
As of press time, the NCFRMI management had yet to issue an official response. However, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has been notified, with staff vowing to continue the protest until their demands are fully addressed.
