The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has commenced the construction of its permanent secretariat in Abuja, signaling a new chapter in the development of sports administration in the country.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Saturday, was attended by top officials from the Federal Ministry of Sports, Olympic stakeholders, and representatives of the African National Olympic Committees Association (ANOCA).
Speaking at the event, NOC President Engr. Habu Gumel described the project as a “historic step” that will provide a stable operational base for the Committee and enhance its international image.
“For decades, the NOC has operated without a permanent home. This project will not only institutionalize our presence in the capital but also serve as a hub for Olympic movement activities in Nigeria,” Gumel stated.
The secretariat, which will be located within Abuja’s central district, is designed to include administrative offices, a resource center, conference halls, and training spaces for sports administrators and officials.
Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, who was represented at the event, commended the NOC’s initiative, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting long-term infrastructure that will uplift Nigeria’s sporting potential.
Construction is expected to be completed in phases, with the first phase scheduled for delivery in early 2026.
Observers say the new NOC headquarters will strengthen Nigeria’s readiness for upcoming global sports competitions and contribute to building a more coordinated and efficient Olympic structure in the country.
