The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria, has carried out an inspection of key facilities along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor as part of ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of rail operations in the country.
During the visit, which included stops at the Rigasa and Kakuri stations in Kaduna as well as the Kaduna Inland Dry Port, Okhiria reiterated the NRC’s commitment to expanding freight movement across Nigeria.
He disclosed that the Corporation is working to ensure seamless transport of goods nationwide using both standard and narrow-gauge rail lines. He added that locally assembled wagons from the NRC’s facility in Kajola, Ogun State, will soon be deployed to support cargo services.
“The Abuja–Kaduna corridor is not just for passenger trains. We are intensifying plans to begin full-scale cargo movement to and from the north using this route,” Okhiria said.
He also noted that the Kaduna Dry Port remains a key part of the government’s strategy to decongest seaports and encourage inland cargo processing.
The inspection is seen as a significant step in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development and economic integration across Nigeria.
With increasing demand for affordable and secure cargo transportation, stakeholders are optimistic that the NRC’s renewed focus on freight services will reduce road congestion and cut logistics costs.
