President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to mark this year’s Democracy Day with a national broadcast scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, followed by a high-profile appearance at a joint sitting of the National Assembly in Abuja.
Unlike previous years, this year’s celebration will not feature the usual Democracy Day parade, which has been officially canceled. The change marks a notable shift in the annual commemorative pattern.
Later in the day, a public lecture is scheduled to take place at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre. The lecture is expected to reflect on the evolution of Nigeria’s democratic journey, as well as government policy directions moving forward.
June 12 was officially recognized as Democracy Day in 2018 to honour the significance of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.
This year’s events are anticipated to be both symbolic and strategic, as they come amid growing calls for institutional reforms and a more inclusive democratic process across the country.
