In a move to boost accountability in Nigeria’s power sector, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has released a list of customers who will receive refunds and compensation for past overbilling and poor service.

The refunds follow regulatory action by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which penalized AEDC with a ₦1.69 billion deduction from its 2024 operating budget. This fine represents 10% of the excess charges billed to unmetered customers between May and September 2023, against NERC’s billing cap policy.

The list, now live on AEDC’s website, includes names, meter numbers, and account details of affected customers across different service areas.

Most beneficiaries are unmetered households, now credited with billing adjustments that will reflect in their upcoming bills. Notably, nearly 100 customers in Wuse, FCT, are listed for refunds related to overbilling from January to September 2023.

The refunds are scheduled over three billing cycles July, August, and September 2024, and cover both regular and Meter Asset Provider (MAP) customers. Refund details by location and amount are to be settled by May 2025.

AEDC is also compensating Band A customers those guaranteed at least 20 hours of power daily who received less than the promised supply in certain months.

These compensations come as prepaid top-ups or credit adjustments for postpaid users, covering April 2020, and multiple months in 2024 and January 2025.

The initiative signals growing regulatory oversight and renewed efforts to ensure fair billing and reliable service.

Customers are advised to check the published list and contact AEDC for clarification or support if needed.
