Tight Security at Mogadishu Barracks After Nyanya Explosion
Security has been reinforced at Mogadishu Barracks, near Nyanya-Mararaba, days after an explosion rocked the area described by some sources as a failed suicide bombing.
Though normalcy has returned with traders and commuters back, military checks have been intensified, especially at the Mami Market entrance. Soldiers now conduct thorough searches on all visitors.
A POS operator near the market voiced confidence in the military’s alertness, saying in Pidgin: “Nothing fit touch us for here. Soldiers wey dey here no dey smile.”
The blast, which occurred on Monday around 2:50 p.m., left one person injured. While the FCT Police confirmed an explosion, a now-deleted NEMA post described it as a failed suicide attack. It said a suspect carrying an IED was intercepted at the gate before the device detonated, killing the suspect and injuring a bystander.
A military report supported this version, stating the suspect had alighted from a Volkswagen Golf before being stopped by a military police officer.
The Nigerian Army has yet to provide a detailed update, only saying via its X handle: “Explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation under control.”
Meanwhile, business activity has resumed outside, but the tight security reflects ongoing vigilance and concern over potential threats.
