Abuja, Nigeria – May 6, 2025Tension is rising across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have rejected a proposed ₦40,000 wage increase, calling it a “slap in the face” and a betrayal of workers’ rights.

Speaking in Gwagwalada, FCT NULGE Secretary, Comrade Sa’ad Abdulmumin, accused council chairmen of plotting to implement a flat ₦40,000 increase, instead of the ₦70,000 minimum wage demand already submitted by the union.

“We will resist this betrayal,” Abdulmumin declared. “The council bosses want to mimic the FCT administration’s approach, but we won’t accept any attempt to dodge the national wage template.”

The union warned of looming mass protests, industrial action, and a monitoring campaign of financial transactions within the councils, with threats to report any suspicious activities to anti-corruption agencies.

As council chairmen maintain silence, the union remains firm, declaring that workers’ welfare is non-negotiable and vowing not to back down until their demands are met.
