The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release popular socialite and businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu, within 24 hours.
The court ruling came after Achimugu challenged her detention, which she claimed was unlawful and in violation of her fundamental human rights. The EFCC had detained her in connection with an ongoing investigation, although no formal charges had been filed at the time of her arrest.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, who delivered the judgment, held that the EFCC failed to justify the continued detention of Achimugu. He ruled that detaining a citizen without filing charges or obtaining a valid court order was unconstitutional.
“The EFCC must either charge her to court or release her immediately. Holding someone beyond the legal timeframe without due process is a violation of her rights,” the judge said.
Achimugu, known for her social prominence and involvement in various business ventures, was reportedly arrested in early April. Details of the investigation remain unclear, but sources say it may be related to financial transactions linked to public funds.
The ruling has drawn public attention due to Achimugu’s status and the broader issue of how anti-corruption agencies conduct arrests and detentions.
The EFCC has yet to officially respond to the court’s order at the time of this report.
