VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis, known around the world for his humility, compassion, and dedication to reform, has died at the age of 88.

The Vatican confirmed the sad news on Easter Monday, announcing that the Pope passed away peacefully at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in Vatican City.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo of the Catholic Church, officially announced the passing:

“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sorrow that I announce the passing of our Holy Father, Francis,” he said. “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome returned to the house of the Father.”

Just one day earlier, Pope Francis had made what would become his final public appearance, bravely attending Easter Sunday Mass despite ongoing health struggles. His presence at the Mass touched many, as it reflected his deep commitment to his mission, even in his final hours.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first Jesuit Pope and the first from Latin America. Throughout his papacy, he stood out for his strong focus on mercy, social justice, and care for the poor and marginalized.

His leadership style, grounded in kindness and simplicity, earned him admiration far beyond the walls of the Vatican. Cardinal Farrell praised his life, calling it “a powerful witness to the Gospel,” and added, “He showed us how to live out the Gospel with courage, faithfulness, and deep love.”

Funeral details and information about the next steps in Church leadership are expected to be announced soon.
