Presidency Sets Sights on Solar: ₦10 Billion Approved for Clean Energy

In a bid to promote clean energy and reduce reliance on diesel-powered generators, the Federal Government has allocated the sum of ₦10 billion for the installation of a solar mini-grid at the Presidential Villa. The provision was captured in the 2025 approved budget for the State House.

The solar mini-grid project is part of a broader national effort to cut down on the cost of electricity across public institutions, while also aligning with global and domestic sustainability goals. The move is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the Villa and ensure a more reliable power supply.

This development comes alongside a larger federal initiative, the National Public Sector Solarisation Programme, under which ₦100 billion has been earmarked for the deployment of solar mini-grids across key public facilities including universities, teaching hospitals, and federal unity schools.

The government hopes that the transition to solar energy will not only ease the financial burden of high electricity bills but also contribute to Nigeria’s energy security and climate change mitigation strategies.
