The forgery case filed against the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, was on Wednesday stalled following the absence of Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Ilela at the Dutse Magistrates’ Court in Abuja.
Maikalangu was slated to be arraigned over allegations of submitting forged First School Leaving Certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2013 and 2021, during his bids for councillorship and later chairmanship.
The case was initiated by Awalu Mohammed, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a resident of AMAC, who accused Maikalangu of deliberately falsifying the certificates and their accompanying affidavits — an act which he claims contravenes provisions of the Penal Code.
Mohammed also stated that he obtained certified copies of the disputed documents from both INEC and the FCT Tribunal to support his claims.
Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, counsel to the complainant, Job Israel, confirmed that the magistrate was initially present in court but had been summoned away by higher judicial authorities, prompting the adjournment.
The case has now been rescheduled for April 24.
