The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to be installed along the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway.
Umahi shared this on Sunday at the flag-off of the road’s reconstruction, starting from the Abuja-Kaduna section. He said the 700-kilometre road will be built with strong concrete pavement and should be completed in 14 months.
The Minister explained that the road is very important for the economy of Northern Nigeria and is being rebuilt at a cost of N777 billion. He also said that the project was given to a new company after the contract with Julius Berger was cancelled.
President Tinubu also added 11 extra kilometres to the road, which will extend to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.
Umahi added that the remaining parts of the road, about 118 kilometres, have been awarded for N252 billion — and 30% of the money has already been paid. Another section, about 164 kilometres long, was awarded for N525 billion.
He said these new roads are designed to last between 50 and 100 years.
The Minister praised Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for helping to make the project possible and thanked him for supporting President Tinubu.
Other speakers at the event, including the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, and former Kaduna South Senator Danjuma La’al, also praised the Federal Government for improving Nigeria’s roads.
