The Lions Club has commissioned a set of vital projects at Junior Secondary School (JSS) Gwarinpa 1 in Abuja, aimed at improving the school’s learning environment and addressing long-standing challenges like open defecation and security risks.
Led by the club’s president, Lion Oluyomi David Coker, the commissioning ceremony highlighted the completion of several key projects. These include the construction of modern toilets for both boys and girls, a new perimeter fence, a borehole for clean water, renovation of the staff room and principal’s office, and the installation of a new school gate.
Speaking at the event, Lion Coker stressed the Lions Club’s commitment to promoting education and supporting community development.
“Education is the foundation of a strong society, and every child deserves to learn in a safe and healthy environment,” he said. “This project is a reflection of our dedication to service and to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”
The school’s principal, Mr. Emenike Okoro, expressed deep gratitude to the Lions Club, noting that the intervention came at a critical time.
“The broken perimeter wall had exposed our school to security threats, especially being so close to the market,” Okoro explained. “Not only did the Lions Club fix the fence, but they also provided toilets, a borehole, renovated our staff spaces, and even offered scholarships to students.”
Also present at the event was Dr. Hassan Sule, Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), who praised the Lions for their dedication to improving education in Nigeria.
“These kinds of contributions have a lasting impact on both schools and the wider community,” he said, urging more organizations to emulate the club’s example.
In his remarks, Lion Sir Maurice Ibok, District Governor of District 404A2, encouraged the school’s staff and students to take proper care of the new facilities.
“When the community takes ownership, these projects will last for years to come,” he noted.
The occasion also featured the induction of the Hakimi of Gwarinpa 1, Chief Umar Bayero, as a new member of the Lions Club. In return, the Hakimi honoured Lion Coker with a special award and praised the club’s continuous efforts in supporting education and community welfare.
This commissioning marks another milestone in the Lions Club’s mission to create lasting social impact, offering hope to many other schools in need of similar interventions.
