FCT Women’s Football: AMAC, Kwali Dominate Opening Matches
The long-awaited FCT FA Inter-Area Councils Women’s Football Tournament kicked off on a high note on Thursday, April 10, 2025, as AMAC and Kwali recorded impressive victories in their opening matches.
The tournament, organized by the FCT Football Association through its Women’s Football Committee, aims to promote talent discovery and support gender inclusion in football across all six Area Councils of the FCT.
In the opening fixtures, AMAC secured a 2-0 win over Bwari at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Practice Pitch, while Kwali dominated Abaji with a commanding 9-1 victory at the Abaji Football Pitch.
Speaking after the kickoff game, Mr. Kayode Adeniyi, General Manager of NTA Sports and former Chairman of FCT SWAN, praised the tournament, calling it a great step forward for girls in sports.
“This is not just football — it’s about social change, community growth, and giving young girls a platform. Special credit goes to Pat Ajuma Ayegba for her passion and effort in making this happen,” he said.
Patrick Bassey, FCT FA Board Member and Chairman of the Technical Committee, was equally excited about the future, saying:
“We saw real talent today. The FCT FA is serious about helping young female footballers grow through organized competitions like this. Our technical team is watching closely for future league and national team prospects.”
Tournament organizer and former Nigerian international, Pat Ajuma Ayegba, expressed pride in the kickoff:
“This is the beginning of a dream — to give every girl a chance to play football, whether on the street or in school. This tournament is just the start of many more platforms we plan to create for young girls.”
The tournament will continue over the coming weeks with home-and-away matches across all Area Councils. The top two teams will qualify for the semi-finals, leading to a grand finale where the first-ever champion will be crowned.
