The Federal Government has issued a flood warning for Abuja and 30 other states in Nigeria, as the country prepares for a season of heavy rains. The warning, announced by the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, highlights the increased risks of flooding in various parts of the country due to expected downpours.

Minister Joseph Utsev urged residents of the affected regions to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their properties. He disclosed that 1,249 communities across 176 local government areas are considered to be at high risk of flooding, with an additional 2,187 communities across 293 councils facing moderate risks.

The warning serves as a reminder for local authorities to improve their flood preparedness and response measures to minimize potential damage. The government also called on residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid actions that could exacerbate the risks, such as blocking drainage systems and building in flood-prone areas.

As the rainy season intensifies, authorities continue to monitor water levels in key reservoirs and rivers to mitigate the impact of flooding on communities, homes, and vital infrastructure.
