Abuja, Nigeria – April 8, 2025

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday, presided over the Commission’s weekly management meeting at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, which brought together top management staff of the electoral body, comes amid swirling rumors on social media regarding the leadership and operations of the Commission. However, Professor Yakubu’s presence at the meeting appeared to put to rest the speculations, reaffirming his continued leadership and the Commission’s commitment to its responsibilities.

Though INEC has not officially responded to the rumors, sources within the Commission described them as baseless and aimed at distracting the agency from its core mandate of conducting credible elections in Nigeria.

The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed, but it is believed to focus on ongoing preparations for upcoming off-cycle elections, continuous voter registration, and electoral reforms.

Professor Yakubu’s leadership has been under public scrutiny in recent months, with various groups expressing contrasting opinions on INEC’s performance. Nevertheless, the Chairman’s appearance and active role in Tuesday’s meeting signals stability within the electoral body.
