Abuja, Nigeria – April 8, 2025

The Federal Government has released a total of N2.035 billion to 1,147 School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in a major push to improve basic education infrastructure and community participation in school governance.

The disbursement is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to strengthen the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program, ensuring schools have the necessary resources to foster better learning environments and accountability at the grassroots level.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the funds were allocated based on detailed proposals submitted by the SBMCs, which outlined critical needs ranging from renovation of classrooms, provision of teaching materials, to improving water and sanitation facilities.

“The goal is to empower communities to take ownership of their schools,” the Executive Secretary stated. “When parents, teachers, and local leaders collaborate, the results are always more impactful.”

Each SBMC is expected to manage the funds transparently and submit regular progress reports to UBEC and relevant state authorities. Monitoring teams have also been set up to ensure compliance and quality control.

Education stakeholders have praised the move, describing it as a “step in the right direction” toward reducing infrastructure gaps and increasing local participation in educational development.

The intervention is part of a broader education reform agenda by the Federal Government, aiming to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on inclusive and equitable quality education.
