Tension is rising ahead of Nigeria’s first-ever National Police Day, as the Nigeria Police Force raises concerns over a planned protest by the “Take It Back Movement” scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025.
The protest, expected to take place in several states—especially in the Federal Capital Territory—coincides with the official celebration honouring the service and sacrifices of police officers across the country.
High-profile dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and international diplomats, are expected to attend the historic event.
The police have warned that the protest’s timing appears deliberate and may overshadow the national celebration.
While affirming citizens’ right to peaceful assembly, the police questioned the motive behind organizing a protest on such an important day.
“This planned action is suspicious and could be seen as an attempt to disrupt peace and dampen national pride,” the police said.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urged the protest organisers to consider dialogue with relevant authorities instead of taking to the streets in a way that could threaten unity and public order.
The Police Force also called on citizens and groups to prioritise peace and national interest, warning of potential disruptions if the protest proceeds as planned.
