In a bold move to tackle the shortage of doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a seven-year training program.
According to Lere Olayinka, the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, this recruitment is part of a broader plan to engage a total of 60 doctors across eight medical specialties.
The first batch includes:
- 5 in psychiatry
- 4 in internal medicine
- 1 in general surgery
- 1 in anesthesiology
- 8 in family medicine
- 6 in ophthalmology
- 9 in obstetrics and gynecology
This initiative, the first of its kind outside the Health Management Board, aims to strengthen healthcare delivery across hospitals in the FCT. The remaining 26 doctors will be recruited later by the FCTA Civil Service Commission.
