Riwaza community in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is in shock after suspected herdsmen allegedly killed John Moses Gwatana following a dispute over a water pond.

Eyewitnesses say the violence broke out around 11:23 a.m. on Sunday when herders led their cattle to drink from the pond, which is the community’s only water source, contaminating it.

Angered by the situation, some women confronted the herders, sparking a heated argument. Two women ran back to the village to report the incident, and Gwatana, along with two other men, rushed to the scene to address the herders.

During the confrontation, one of the herders reportedly drew a machete and fatally stabbed Gwatana, while the other two men were seriously injured.

The injured villagers were taken to a hospital in Gwagwalada for treatment, while the attackers fled with their cattle before local vigilantes arrived.

Reports suggest that the herders were migrating from Zago village in Niger State.

The police have confirmed the incident, but the FCT Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the attack.
