The Dorothy Njemanze Foundation (DNF) shelter for survivors of gender-based violence was saved from closure after financial support from Fairmont Petroleum Limited.

The shelter provides a safe space for women and children escaping abuse. It was at risk of shutting down due to lack of funds, leaving many vulnerable.

The intervention was announced in Abuja at the premiere of Voices Within, a docudrama hosted by the Daurama Foundation as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Dorothy Njemanze, founder of DNF, spoke about the shelter’s struggles and the urgent need for help.

“For many survivors, the shelter is their only refuge. The risk of closure was overwhelming, but this support ensures women and children in crisis have a safe space to rebuild their lives,” Njemanze said.

Dr. Gazzali Salisu Buhari, Chairman of Fairmont Petroleum Limited, pledged to cover the shelter’s costs as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

“Listening to Dorothy’s appeal made it clear that urgent action was needed. Businesses must contribute meaningfully, and keeping the shelter open will prevent survivors from facing homelessness,” Dr. Buhari said.

This financial aid will help the shelter continue providing emergency housing, legal help, and rehabilitation services.

Dr. Samira Buhari, leader of the Daurama Foundation, highlighted the role of private sector support in fighting gender-based violence.

“This partnership shows the power of collective action. With continued support, we can strengthen long-term aid for survivors,” she said.

The event also stressed the need for justice and accountability in addressing gender-based violence. Voices Within portrayed survivor experiences and called for stronger action against offenders.

With this support, the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation can continue to provide shelter and assistance to survivors, helping them rebuild their lives while supporting broader efforts to end gender-based violence.
