Abuja, Nigeria – The FCT Police Command has issued a warning against unauthorized hiking and camping in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The police say this move is to ensure public safety and prevent criminal activities in secluded areas.
In a statement released on Monday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benneth Igweh, said that security agencies have observed a rise in illegal camping and hiking in unsafe locations. He warned that individuals engaging in such activities without approval could face legal action.
“We have received reports of security threats in some hiking areas. Our duty is to protect lives and ensure public order. We advise residents to use approved sites and inform security agencies before organizing outdoor activities,” the statement read.
The police urged hikers and campers to prioritize safety by moving in groups, avoiding isolated areas, and following regulations. They also encouraged organizers to seek permission before planning such events.
Residents have reacted with mixed feelings. While some agree that security is important, others argue that hiking and camping are harmless activities that promote health and tourism. A regular hiker, Tunde Olatunji, said, “We understand the security risks, but banning it outright is not the solution. The government should improve security instead.”
The FCT Police Command reassured the public that its aim is to prevent crime and ensure safe recreation. Authorities have promised to work with local communities and tourism operators to create secure outdoor spaces.
As security concerns grow, the question remains: Will this move make Abuja safer, or limit outdoor activities unnecessarily?
